A Geek Clock, my most recent binary clock app is now available for purchase on the App Store. It was approved today. A Geek Clock was inspired by my first iPhone binary clock application, Binary Watch.
This particular binary clock is more advanced than the first one I developed in that it has a much nicer, easier to read interface and has more customization options. For instance, in the settings pane you can adjust the color of the LED’s. As of version 1.0 you can select from five different colors, Blue, Yellow, Orange, Green, and Pink.
Apart from choosing LED colors, you can also choose between a 12 and 24 hour time format. Other options include a Learning mode that displays the current time underneath the LED’s and displays the numbers that need to be added together to form the time to the right of the LED’s.
You can also setup A Geek Clock to stay on indefinitely, making it perfect to setup on a night stand using the little plastic stand included with your iPhone when you purchased it, giving a feeling of having a real clock and because its so bright it can be used as a flash light as well. I took some screen shots of the clock in action as well as some of the settings pane.
Future releases to A Geek Clock will include more background themes and different LED colors, perhaps I’ll also include a stop watch and an alarm option and for those of you that like to hear the seconds ticking I might include that sound as well. If there are any specific LED colors anyone is interested in, please let me know, I’d be happy to add them.
Feedback is welcome and appreciated.
Update: A Geek Clock Version 1.1 Released on the App Store today March 4th 2010
The new version features the following:
- 4 New Colors to choose from – Red, Midnight Blue, Aqua and Purple
- Choose separate colors for hours, minutes and seconds. Just with a few clicks you can have your hours displayed in Red, your minutes displayed in blue and your seconds displayed in green or any other combination of colors that you’d like to use.
- Everyone loves themes, so I decided to start with 1 theme and see how it goes, if you guys like it then I’ll most likely be adding more themes to choose from. I’ll even consider theme requests. The first theme I am including is the matrix theme, hope you guys like it.
- The status bar is now hidden by default when you start the Application
That’s it for the changes for version 1.1 and if anyone has any special requests for the next release, just let me know and I’ll see what I can do. Check out the screen shots below for a preview of version 1.1

This application does not work. It starts up and immediately closes.
Darryl,
Could you provide some more detail..
Things I would like to know:
What device are you using? iPhone, iPhone 3g, iPhone 3gs, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 1st, 2nd, 3rd gen, iPad?
What country are you?
What version of iOS are you running on your device.
The feedback would be much appreciated in helping me resolve the problem.
Chris
Hi Chris
I’m using the iPhone4 version 4.2.1 and I’m in the U.S.
Thanks
Darryl
Darryl,
I will do some testing and see what I can come up with.. A Geek Clock is due for an update, while I am working on this update, do you have any suggestions for improvements?
Chris
Can you tell me when this update will be out?
Darryl,
I will most likely be submitting it tomorrow. I’ll post here when Apple approves it.
Chris
Chris
Any news?
Darryl
Darryl M,
For now, a quick fix is to turn off 24 hour time format. You can do this by going to Settings -> General -> Date & Time and then setting 24-Hour Time to Off. Apparently this was a new feature that was added to iOS 4 which presents the time in a slightly different way. So the problem that I thought was the issue was not the issue to begin with. I will get this fixed soon but for now, this should make it work. Please let me know if that worked for you.
Chris
I turned off 24 hr mode and it still did not help. I changed from default frame to Matrix frame (no help) and back to default frame – still no good.
Darryl,
Quick question, under Settings -> General -> International, what do you have Region Format and Calendar set to?
Chris
Calendar is set to Gregorian.
Darryl,
How about Region Format?
Chris
Region is United States
Darryl,
Here are all of my settings, and it works just fine for me. All of these are under Settings -> General
Date & Time
24-Hour Time Off
Set Automatically On
International
Language English
Voice Control English
Keyboards 1
Region Format United States
Calendar Gregorian
I’m running 4.2.1
Let me know if any of these settings are different from yours.
CRAP! I turned off 24 hr mode on the Geek Clock but I had 24 hr mode turned on on my phone. When I switched my 24 hr mode off on my phone it works. However, I need 24 hr mode so this app is not going to work for me if I can’t use 24 hr mode. But thanks for all your attention in finding the problem. Hope there’s an update in the future that addresses this problem.
Thanks again
Darryl
Darryl,
No worries, I’m working on the update, just haven’t got it to the App Store yet. I’ll post when I have it uploaded. Thanks for being patient
Chris
