MKV2AppleTV is one of the many applications I’ve developed for Mac OS X. It is also the first application that I am charging for. All previously developed applications have been and will remain free and can be downloaded from my blog at http://chris-fletcher.com.
MKV2AppleTV was developed to make it easy to convert MKV files to files to files that can be added to your iTunes library and streamed to your AppleTV. Not only will it convert MKV files but it also leaves any 5.1 audio track in tact and strips out those unwanted subtitles.
The application can convert 720p or 1080p to HD-MP4 720p. Why only 720p? Because the AppleTV with its current hardware does not fully support the bit-rate and resolution required for 1080p. A lot of forums out there state that you can just transcode the MKV file to an MP4 file without having to re-encode the MKV file. This is possible using Quicktime Pro, but be warned, if you try to transcode anything with a video bit-rate higher than 4500 to 5000, you will have problems streaming to the AppleTV. The AppleTV simply doesn’t have the processing power to support a bit-rate higher than that.
Not to mention, you’ll probably run into issues with multiple audio and subtitle tracks when transcoding an MKV file using Quicktime Pro. MKV2AppleTV has pre-set settings for converting MKV files with the best available video and sound quality. You can download MKV2AppleTV below and use it for free exactly 10 times, after that you’ll need to purchase a license. There is a link for that below as well.
Feedback is appreciated as always, note: the current version is 1.0, and I’ve already had a request to make subtitle stripping an option. This will be implemented in the next release of MKV2AppleTV.
